Working The Fields
Hello Friends and Members,
It's been a busy spring week. Mostly outdoor garden and field work in progress. Great to have so many new CSA Members and Special Order Customers but things get a little confusing at times. And Covid19 masking certainly doesn't help with customer Identification. One of the first Special Order Customers for Lamb last week was my worst performance ever. Looked for it in nearly every cooler as I was certain I packed and loaded it. I should have put my cheater glasses on but they keep fogging up from the mask. Turns out later I found the order in a cooler bag sandwiched under two other orders where I had looked earlier several times. Good excuse anyway!
I completed one 40 acre field of Alfalfa renovation and am ready to do the other tomorrow. Working on completing the primary tillage of a 25 acre field. Also have another 25 acres to do later after the cows graze it down again. They like the weedy chest grass in the spring but the rest of the year it just crowds out other more beneficial plants. That's why I'm working on reseeding them. It's about 52 acres altogether.
This week we had two new calves born the same day! I've been around cattle a lot in my life but I never tire of seeing new born calves. It's really a pleasure to watch them discover life and learn to enjoy it! If they have a problem it's always a valuable and heart inspiring experience to help them survive like Curly's birth I described last week.
SO planted twenty four 50 ft rows using home grown seed potatoes because the regular suppliers are not bringing in any seed spuds this Spring. Fertilized with our own aged chicken manure. She's got 6 hoop/green houses completely planted. Also started planting all the summer and fall squash. Together we're working on restoring the drip tubing watering system.
CSA program news:
Seven new members recently. We'll have to hold off on additional new Members until the summer quarter which starts on June 2nd. The last week of May we are scheduled to take a break from deliveries. By then many new variety's of fresh veggies will start to be available. Most are already planted. Of course the hoop/green house plants start producing the soonest.
Let's take a look at what we plan to bring for the CSA Members this week:
Cooler of the Best Produce:
Micro Green Mix, Lettuce with Spinach Salad Mix, Green Salad Onions and Leeks, Garlic Chives, Herb - Thyme, Swiss Chard, Kale, Daikon Greens, Napa Cabbage Greens, Carrots, Potatoes, Squash, Dry Onion, and Eggs.
Variety of Meats:
Chicken, Ground Beef, Beef Steak Cutlets, Beef Soup Item, Pork Chops, Pork Sausage, Pork Soup/Stir fry item
Special Orders News:
Picked up some more pork items from the processor yesterday. On Wednesday they'll have more beef to pick up so I'll have a pretty good selection on hand. Still may have to substitute a few items but they'll always be of equal or greater value. Taking more beef and pork to the processor in the coming week. In the past we usually received 2-4 Special Orders a week. This week I already have 12 as of Sunday morning! Our capacity is being stress tested but we of course value the additional orders and new customers. As such, we'll do our best to continue doing a good job with our product selection and quality!
Looking forward to seeing you all soon,
Gary & So
