New Baby Calves Born!
Things going better here. Car and well have been repaired. No more smoke but tonight we are getting some of the dust storm from Central WA over by Moses Lake. Not too bad. Sure do need some rain. I'm so covered by dust when I come in from working at the end of the day that my wife makes me take off all my clothes outside before coming inside. Good thing there are no neighbors to see me! Finally gave up and bought a new cell phone. Still trying to figure it out but can take calls. May my previous phone rest in peace in the muddy pig wallow somewhere.
Great Happening! Two new baby calves born. One was from an older cow I thought I was going to have to retire. Here at our farm we've had cows as old as 19 years happily birth new calves. To cut costs most big commercial cattle ranches put down their birthing cows at 10-12 years old. On our ranch our cows usually pass naturally and peacefully of old age.
Have a Sow about to have baby piglets in about a week or so. She is the sow that adopted and raised a bunch of piglets from another sow, who died last Fall, and raised them all with her own.
Have mentioned already that I have had to feed hay for an extended early time period of about two months this year. That's 32 tons of hay so far. Following rains in September we usually have some Fall pasture by now. Instead, we're feeding hay to our cows, hogs, sheep, and horses as well.
Still working on the 40 acres field. Figure I won't be finished till end of next week. Hope we get good rains next Spring! This big project has required getting some equipment repairs and services done earlier.
Hauled the last of my beef and pork to the processor today. Have a few more that'll be ready later this Fall. Ordering about 150 baby chicks next week for next year. Time to start Winterizing the greenhouses and poultry houses soon.
