September Farm Life
Hello Friends and Members,
One day we are feeding Cows apples and the next day we have 4 inches of snow! Heard the forecasts but didn't believe them. Had to spend all day winterizing things early.
Took seven hogs to the Processor early in the week. Our McNab stock dog "Happy" is not only great with cattle but also does a great job rounding up and herding hogs. Glad we got that job done before the weather changed. Before it turned frigid on Saturday it rained steadily for two days with hail mixed in. The driveway is covered with so much water its like driving down a creek. All is muddy around here again like early Spring. Had strong winds as well. What a change from the last few weeks. Had another calf born during all this as well.
The mother was smart enough to hide out for some protection from the winds. Need to load up and mix some feed this week. Had to get all the Winter Squash harvested to keep them from freezing. Covered the potatoes with some old hay tarps to keep the ones near the surface from freezing. No time to get propane so had to buy a half dozen small heaters to put in the greenhouses to keep things from freezing early. Most of the greens growing outside will be killed by the cold. Our elevation here is nearly 2500 feet so its a little colder than in Spokane.
As I mentioned before "SO" has done so much multi species planting in the greenhouses we're hoping it will make up for the cold weather losses outdoors. Let's take a look at what is planned for this week's deliveries.
Micro Greens, Lettuce Salad Mix, Green Onions and Leeks, Carrots, Potatoes, Beets, Napa Cabbage, Chard, Kale , Fennel, Bell Peppers, a few Tomatoes, a few Cucumbers, Summer Squash (last ones), Winter Squash, Garlic Chives, Rhubarb, Herb-Lemon, Kohlorabi Bulb, Daikon Greens, Sesame Leaves, and Eggs
Variety of Meats:
Chicken, Ground Beef, Beef Stew Meat, Beef Steaks, Pork Cutlets, Ham Steaks, Ground Pork Sausage, Surprise item.
Time to think about Ordering Turkeys for the Holidays. Also have some Geese and Ducks. I will do one more round of Custom Beef and Pork for the late October early November time frame. I have only one half pre-processed Lamb left.
