Rocky Ridge Ranch Newsletter - Sept 14

Hello Members and Friends,

This is now the worst smoke we have experienced here in 38 years. They say most is from Oregon and California but plenty the other day from local fires. Right now our smoke visibility is only about 1/8th mile.  In spite of the hazardous smoke we will continue to do our best with the CSA deliveries.  However, if the smoke conditions don't improve some soon it may be difficult harvesting the produce as usual.

Farm News:

Picked up two processed hogs for CSA inventory.  CNJ Meats has been doing their best to keep processing for us which we really appreciate.

On the night of the heavy wind storms that helped start a lot of local fires we had our first surprise frost the same night. Spring squash such as zucchinis were badly damaged as well as lettuce and other greens.  Some hoop and green houses will need work to repair wind storm damages.

Couldn't find our cattle this morning in all the smoke so we drove around in the pastures and range land till they finally came after us balling their unhappiness. They were in the timber looking for clean forage under the trees. Grass is so smoked on top of the dust they are reluctant to eat it.  Some rain would really help!  Decided to feed them some hay which made them pretty happy!  May have to continue feeding hay for awhile till it rains.

One tractor I had in the shop for repairs finally finished at a cost of $6,840.  The shipped parts were delayed and also more expensive.  I have noticed other common supplies getting expensive lately too.

CSA News:

Last week's deliveries went pretty well. We are delivering about 32 to 36 coolers a week now. About three times what we started with early Spring.  Let's take a look at what we plan to deliver this week.

Cooler of the Best Produce:  Micro Green Mix, Lettuce Salad Mix, Corn, Beets, Carrots, Kale Chard, Collards, Cabbage, Potatoes,  Squash, Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Fennel, Half Kohlrabi, Sesame Leaf, Sweet Bell Peppers, Leeks, Salad Onions, Daikon Greens, Herb-Rosemary, and Eggs

Variety of Meats:

Chicken, Ground Beef, Steaks,  Stew Meat or Stir Fry,  Pork Chops, Sausage, Country Style Ribs, Soup Item

Hoping all is well for you during these crazy times.  In spite of everything we feel blessed compared to the challenges of many others.

Gary & So Angell
