Rocky Ridge Ranch Newsletter - May 17
Updated: May 18
Hello Members & Friends,
ATTENTION - Our delivery this week on Thursday the 20th will be our last of the spring quarter. We will not be making a delivery on May 27th. After a short break we will resume the first delivery of the summer quarter on June 3rd.
We will be taking a break to catch up on things and maybe take a few extra days off to rest up. I'm slowly getting better from the severe inflammation side affects of the second Covid19 Pfizer vaccination.
I've been so fortunate to have the part time help of two neighboring small farmers. Without them I may have had to shut down for awhile.
Finished planting the 50 acres of new Alfalfa-Grass Hay or Deluxe Pasture. Only problem was the seed was late and cost almost twice what it was just two years ago. Been waiting two weeks now to get a bulk delivery of diesel fuel. Used to just take a couple days. To finish the seeding job had to load up with 5 gallon jugs.
So far pasture and other hay field growth has been okay from the high moisture level in the soil but now it's starting to dry up. We really just need one good heavy Spring rain! Cattle have been doing well on the Spring pastures so far.
Been working a lot on fences and keeping the cattle on good pasture. Just a few days ago we were surprised to see an older cow have twins and care for them both. The same cow is the mother of one of the new bulls I have been growing. This time we were there to keep the eagles away! The second calf is a little smaller and was born several hours later.
Also had a new Berkshire Gilt have it's first farrowing of 6 new baby piglets. Doing well in the barn. Not possible to take a safe photo yet. Plan to round up some beef soon to take at least 4 to the CNJ Processor in June. Assortment sales of Beef and Pork have been doing well also! Not the same quality of processing but the animals were all fine grown out here earlier on the deluxe organic alfalfa Hay!
Produce production has been tough because of the unusual weather problems and damage to the greenhouses but So has been working hard to catch up.
We weren't planning to include eggs in this years produce CSA but I discovered a 10 year old boy nearby trying to handle a small flock with good quality feed and pasture so I decided to help him by being a regular customer and buying eggs for the CSA and a few on line orders. Have found his eggs to be very high quality!
Let's see what is planned for this coming weeks delivery.
