Rocky Ridge Ranch Newsletter - July 27

Hello Members and Friends,

I do apologize for closing our online Farm Store. It wasn't in my plans. Labor challenges at the processor due to CV19 government restrictions have caused a shortage of meat cuts in my inventory. I'm doing my best to complete deliveries to all CSA Members and the Custom Meat orders which have been pre-paid.

Thankfully my injuries are slowly healing if I don't overdue things. SO also has an injury to her elbow that is still hurting her as she does the gardening.  Makes me wonder if we are finally getting too old for this type of work.  Really happy with the wonderful volunteers that have been helping us out!

Farm News:

I was finally able to pick up two processed hogs and deliver two steers for processing last week. I'm hoping the processor can do more hogs and beef soon but they are very noncommittal.

Still busy picking up and stacking hay. Half done as of today. That's about 180 round bales at 800lb's each.  The cows are on premium pasture of oats and peas I planted this spring. The first alfalfa field cut for hay has a good regrowth so I plan to graze them on it soon.

Still waiting for my biggest tractor to come back from the repair shop. The mechanic is doing a very good rebuild. It's a 80HP 1978 John Deer 2130. Bought it used in 1988 for $7,500. One in good condition now is worth about $16,000.  Still looking for an engine for the other tractor I just bought last year.

Pretty hot weather so the hogs are enjoying a mud wallow to stay cool. Kind of stinky but they sure like it. Except for early morning the chickens rarely leave the shade of the coop lately.

CSA News:

Current CSA Members that need to renew for Fall please contact me for an offline order since the Farm Store is closed and, temporarily, no new Members are permitted to sign up.

The next few weeks will be a little short on beef items until I get more product back from the two steers at the processor.  I'll make up for it later. In the meantime, I have the pork, poultry and lamb if requested.

Lets take a look at what is planned for this week's deliveries:

Cooler of the Best Produce:

Micro Green Mix, Lettuce Salad Mix, Garlic Chives, Salad Green Onions, Beets w/Greens, Head of Cabbage, Napa Cabbage, Daikon Greens, Collard Greens, Kale, Chard, Potatoes, Cucumbers, Summer Squash, Herb-Basil, Sesame leaves, Kohlrabi and eggs

Variety of Meats:

Chicken, Beef Cutlet or substitute, Ground Beef, Ham Steak, Bacon, Ground Pork Sausage. If anyone would like some Beef Stock Bone (Marrow and Knuckle) or Organs like Tongue, Heart and Liver let me know.

See you soon!
