Rocky Ridge Ranch Newsletter - July 26

Hello Members and Friends,

It looks like the heat wave is coming back again this week. Thank you and, to help us all beat the heat, please continue coming early to pick up your deliveries! If you can't come PLEASE send us a message or email to let us know. Last week we waited two hours for those who never showed up. With 98 degree heat forecast for next Thursday we won't be doing that again. The radiant heat on the parking lot pavement makes it even hotter.

We'll be in Tacoma for my brother's funeral early next week but have revised our work schedule hours to still make the Thursday delivery.

Farm News:

Had a strange surprise. The Alfalfa I planted on about 50 acres back in May has finally emerged although still very small plants. While I'll miss this years hay crop I hopefully won't have to reseed it for next year!

Picked up more pork processed by CNJ Custom Meats for inventory. Also scheduled eight Custom Order pork and four beef for August.

Having to feed hay to the cattle already. I'll need to find and buy more hay to have enough for winter! It's getting expensive. Same for the feed grain for the hogs. Due to weather related shortages, inflation and economic uncertainty, all our expenses have been steadily rising. Our processors have already raised their prices already as well. Having said that, we strongly encourage anyone considering ordering custom beef or pork to stock up now as we will be forced to raise our prices soon. There is only one more month to process the remaining livestock for this Fall. Additionally, any sales at this point will go towards purchasing more hay.

CSA News:

We are only one month away from the end of the summer quarter. For those who plan to continue Membership, but have not yet paid, it's time to submit your orders for Fall. Please advise us of your plans. Because of weather challenges and deer raids on the garden we are replanting many greens for the Fall. To slow down the deer I increased the height of our garden fencing to 7 feet and added flags. We'll see if it helps.

Let's look at the planned items for delivery this week.

Produce:

Micro Greens Mix, Lettuce Salad Mix, Kale, Chard, Collard Greens, Napa Cabbage, Squash, Potatoes, Sesame leaves, Cucumber, Green Onions/Leeks, Herb-Rosemary and Garlic Chives, Rhubarb and Eggs

Variety of Meats:

Chicken, Ground Beef, Steak Cutlets, Beef Cross Ribs, Pork Chops, Bacon and Sausage

See everyone soon. Let's beat the heat together!

Gary & So Angell
