Rocky Ridge Ranch Newsletter - Aug 3rd

Hello Friends and CSA Members,

Not much new going on this week except a high temp. of 107 degrees last Thursday and about the same on Friday.  Hard to get much work done all week except in the early mornings.

Farm News:

Two flat tires on the tractor slowed down the hay loading and stacking but not much left to do. About 360 Round Bales. Glad it's about done!

While out checking on water for the cattle I discovered another new baby calf doing well.  Have to tell you about the mother cow.  Bought her a few years ago for only $200. She had an injured hip so no body wanted her.  Well the hip never completely healed and she sometimes struggles with it but this is her fourth calf and she's an excellent mother in spite of her walking challenges.  Right now I have a lot in common with her and hope I can do as well!

Cattle doing well on the Oats and Peas field I planted this Spring. It's about a 50 acre area with some range land pasture and a timber covered area adjacent to it. I am puzzled why they don't seek out the shade of the timber area on these hot days. They have in the past. They just plop down on the pasture when they want to rest and chew their cud.  SO thinks it's cause they don't want to go to far from the water tank. I think it's because they are so happy, fat and lazy!

Have to find time this week to mix another load of feed for the hogs. Except for eating they spend most of their time frolicking around in the wet mud wallow.

Also need to do my own auto servicing. Seems the auto shops around here are all too busy. Seems like the same labor issues as the meat processors.  I should have two beef to pick up next week for the CSA Inventory and hoping for a schedule to do six more pigs.

CSA News:

It's awhile yet but an early reminder, this quarter ends August 20th. We will be on break the following week and will restart with the Fall quarter on September 3rd.

There's been numerous Member schedule changes for the end of summer resulting in a little confusion from it. Sorry about that.

Variety of Meats:

Chicken, several Ground Beef, Pork Chops, Bacon, Ground Pork Sausage. This week will be short on beef cuts. We'll make up for it as soon as we can pick up the Beef from the processor.

Cooler of the Best Produce:

Micro Greens Mix, Lettuce Salad Mix, Kohlrabi, Cucumbers, Cabbage, Herb-Lemon, Swiss Chard, Kale, Collard Greens, Daikon Greens, Salad Onions, Squash, Garlic Chive, Sesame Leaves, Beets w/greens, Potatoes, and Eggs.

See you soon!
