Rocky Ridge Ranch Newsletter - Apr 12

Hello Members & Friends,

We’ve been working with windstorms again. I think this is the most we‘ve ever had during our nearly 40 years on the farm. I was also out on our West bluff yesterday checking fences and looked down to see our first forest fire. Thankfully the fire department was already there! A fire started in this same area a few years ago and wound up burning over 100 acres of our range land.

We got our second Pfizer vaccination last Monday and I've had severe inflammation over all my joints since. The last couple of days it's been hard to just get up and walk because of the pain. Makes it pretty hard to sleep too. So is also experiencing pain in her lower back. But besides the back pain, mild headaches and fevers she is still getting around pretty good. We’ve also been lucky to recruit a neighbor to help. Anyway, we seem to be gradually improving so we’re determined to make the next delivery.

Farm News

Two more new baby calves makes a total of four just recently. Finished processing all the cattle last Tuesday morning. Pleased with all the new young heifers with no horn growth. I have a personal breeding program crossing the Wagyu (Kobe) with Black Angus and the Original Aberdeen Angus. The main problem is neutralizing the horns from the Wagyu's but retaining their special meat marbling characteristics. All three breeds are famous for their ability to produce high quality meat from a forage only pasture environment.

Still doing more fencing work when possible but it never seems to end. Planning to start helping with outside garden cultivation work this week. Hope my strength returns soon so I can get all these things done.

CSA News

So is still a Gorilla Tape fanatic mending the green houses during all the wind storms! So far she has been keeping everything growing but has had to concentrate more on young greens for harvest. She has been stocking up on young plants for transplanting.

Lets take a look at what’s planned for the next delivery:

Looking forward to seeing everyone soon,
