Hay Hay Hay :)
Remember No Delivery on July 4th. We'll see those expecting a delivery on the 4th on July 11th instead. Hoping everyone has a great Independence day celebration holiday!!!
The biggest event of the year on most farms is harvest time. For us that's the Hay harvest. Starting Monday we'll be cutting about 120 acres of Alfalfa/Grass hay. The cutting will take about 10 extra long days, without any equipment breakdowns that is. Later will have to pick up all the hay bales and stack them for the Winter. We rarely have enough to sell. An older farmer told me once to try to stock up a two year supply in order to be ready for a bad drought year. For the last 4 years we have had good yields on 80 acres. Last year I planted another 40 acres which looks like it'll do pretty well.
Sent 2 beef and 4 hogs to the processor last Monday. Live beef prices are going up steadily across the country due to the high number of cattle lost because of bad weather and flooding. This will most likely make feed and hay prices increase as well. Thankfully our cattle are enjoying premium pasture conditions. Most of the young bulls are now steers. Did save a couple for possible bull replacements next year.
Got most of the urgent fence work done. Still have more that needs work but not urgent yet. Garden work still moving along. I got to eat the first ripe tomato. Cucumbers already doing well.
As above remember your delivery schedule will slip one week after this weeks delivery. Suggest folks try a Meat Special Order if items needed for the 4th holiday. I am willing to make periodic meat substitutes when requested in advance. The same goes for produce.
