Back in the CSA Saddle Again!
Hello Friends and Members,
Well it's time to start another season of deliveries. For the CSA , I have been in contact with you all and notified you of your schedule if you are a Half Share Member. A few have not verified yet for next week, but all is okay for this first delivery. As before deliveries will be on Thursdays from 3-6 PM beginning this March 4th.
Have to say this has been the worst weather ever for our Winter produce growing. The windstorms and severe cold with the resulting wind chills has made it tough! With the damage to most of the Hoop Houses and Greenhouses we've had to limit Spring Produce CSA Memberships. We've worked hard through the Winter to rebuild our solid inventory of quality meats.
Our pet cow "Curly" finally passed on a few weeks ago. She was about 16 years old and has raised 13 calves for us. As many of you have heard her mother who was 17 years old died when Curly was being delivered. We managed to pull her out and started raising her in our extra bathroom as it was still Winter. Later she stayed in our front yard for the first Summer and played with the dogs and our visiting children. She learned to eat a lot of left over produce most cows don't get. She continued this for the rest of her life and would always wait for us in the morning when my wife SO would feed her from the garden or left overs from the house. Eventually she became the leader of the herd and led them to pastures for us and attacked predators to protect calves. This led to several of the other cows learning to do the same. We will miss her very much!

Got two of my older tractors repaired and doing fine. The used newer tractor will have to wait for the funds of about $10,000 to repair it. Last Fall got a 50 acre field ready to plant this Spring if the seed is still available and affordable. Inflation in costs of many common farm supplies, fuels and repair parts, as well as feeds has been very apparent lately. Good thing we still have enough hay for the cows but feed grain to supplement pasture feeding for the Pigs has been an issue. Starting to get things ready for the Spring field work and do fencing repairs as weather permits. Just got two vehicles all serviced but the old 1 Ton needs more work. We use it most to haul feed and fencing supplies.
Just had another baby calf born during the last wind storm but it it is doing fine along with another one born during the severe wind storm. I've started feeding them in a hollow back in the rocky timber areas to provide some protection from the high winds. From there they decided to break down a fence and visit the pig pens. Soon they were all living in the shelters together. We just sorted them out yesterday which was quite a chore! Had to restore the fences and still more to do for the pig area.
Have had some challenges with power outages. Water lines in the barn froze and had to put extra heaters in place to warm them up. Luckily none cracked. Have a generator to keep things going in the green houses and garden. Also have the propane heat for them. In order to grow things faster in the remaining Greenhouses we've been keeping the heat and lights going 24 hours a day which is pretty costly.
Weather forecast looks okay for our first delivery but it snowed again a little last night. First produce deliveries will have fresh greens and some storage veggies. Got some storage items from another farm nearby to help out. Also we will have some eggs available at first even though not included in CSA Program. Will provide to the Produce CSA for a while to help make up for any initial veggie shortages. Most Meat items now available with a few specialty items to pick up soon.
Let's take a look at the planned items for this coming week.
Cooler of Produce:
Micro Green Mix, Salad Lettuce Mix, Salad Onions and Leeks, Herb-Rosemary, Kale, Collard Greens, Daikon Cabbage Greens, Potatoes, Squash, Carrots, Dry Onion, Beets, and Eggs.

Online Special Orders:
Most Sample Box and Assortments of Meats selections are available. We're not offering most Select-A-Cut individual items at this time but Ground Beef Boxes and Soup Bones are available.
