Been a very busy week. Summer decided to arrive early and everything is growing fast! Hay, produce and weeds! Hard to believe the Spring Quarter Season for CSA and Special Order Deliveries finishes this week. We'll skip a week and be making the next Summer Quarter Delivery on May 30th.
Even more fence work and equipment repairs to be done. First time ever I've had all three tractors broken down with major problems all at once. Repairs are delayed while waiting for the parts and finding enough time to do all the work. Will probably not be able to do the Spring field work and some of the garden cultivation on time. Hope to have things done in time to do the Hay harvest though.
Will be taking two pigs on Tuesday for processing and another two next week. Only have six left. Also it's time to place Beef orders for those who want beef in time for Mid-Summer and early Fall.
All the critters seem to be enjoying the warm weather and great pasture growth. Poultry pasturing again and egg production increasing. The baby piglets are scampering and rooting around doing well. Alfalfa/Grass field and Triticali/Peas field planted last year seem to be doing well. If we don't have a drought or heat wave as some predict, should have plenty for hay.
All the Green/Hoop Houses are thriving with growth and my wife is busy with the outdoor planting. Think I'll send some more photo's of them to compare to a few weeks ago. Cucumbers, Peas, Tomatoes and other vine growing veggies are inter planted with the greens. Planted four 50 ft. rows of Summer squash Saturday. New Asparagus patch is growing. Strawberries are starting to blossom. Last Winter a giant snow drift severely damaged the Raspberry patch and left it looking like a tornado went through it. Did a quick pruning and some plants are showing renewed growth for at least some yield.
A challenge with farming for over 35 years here is that a lot of things start to wear out, get old and break down. Just when you think you got a lot done, things need to be done all over again! We can still put in a long day but need to take longer rest periods to recover. People keep asking us when we're going to retire. The truth is we don't want to stop farming but may have to slow down a little :)
This is the last weekly delivery for the first 12 week Quarter Early Spring Season. We will be skipping a week and start the Summer Quarter on May 30th.
