We are a Small Family Farm located in the Inland Northwest near Spokane, Washington.
We practice sustainable and organic farming methods.
We do not capitalize on the nature of a hungry pig to eat almost anything. We never feed rendered animal products for fat and protein as is done in industrial hog production facilities. No antibiotics or other artificial growth stimulants such as hormones are ever used.
All of our feed is ground, mixed, and prepared fresh at the farm. Modern domestic pigs of all types need grain feeding in addition to pasture to grow normally. We finish the pigs with all vegetarian*(see note) inputs such as alfalfa, linseed, and flax meals with Icelandic kelp and fresh local grains like barley, wheat, oats, triticale, and peas grown by our neighbors. This feed mix is provided free choice on pasture along with fresh fruit and vegetables as they are available. They love the apples and squash the most.
We do not finish hogs with corn or soy which can raise the levels of saturated fat and accelerate the spoiling of the fat in cured meat. (for more information, please see pages 76 and 218 of The Omnivore's Dilemma, by Michael Pollan © 2006)
*Note: Even though pigs are not vegetarians by nature, we simply do not trust the source and content of modern rendered products. The pigs are welcome to eat any critters they find while foraging on pasture.
